This book offers a new perspective for those who think cops only eat doughnuts and pull people over for no reason. This book provides a chronicle of crime and, occasionally politics, in Kansas City, Missouri, over the span of half a century. These are real cops, sharing their observations and feelings. These are real cops who have spent countless hours poring over fingerprints, cataloguing evidence to identify suspects. These are real cops, who when the state prosecutor's office wouldn't file cases to help break up a notorious Gypsy crime ring, went against the system, using a television journalist to get the case the attention it deserved to get the cases filed. These are cops with families, cops who have seen their fellow policemen die, cops who have been caught in shoot-outs, robberies and house fires. These stories run the entire gamut, from funny to horrible, from pathetic to heartwarming, from wild and exciting to downright unbelievable. While most of us sleep and chase our dreams, cops watch and wait for evil to manifest itself so they can track it down and snuff it out. These are real-world stories of good guys vs. bad guys, of life and death, and all the strange, funny and ridiculous mistakes and mishaps that happen to a policeman carrying a badge.
I got the book only 4 days ago and finished in record time, even while working 10.5 hours a day for all 4 of those days. The book is compiled of great stories of real life people doing some of the most dangerous work in America and not even realizing they are there in the moment. The book is defined as easy reading by humble men. The author's life, Jerry, is covered in the first 100 pages or so and the remainder is left to his colleagues and friends and stories of their lives.Imagine Mayberry with a modern feel. These men represent what is good and what brings good people to our Police Forces across the country. We hear so many bad things about a corrupt few and they end up representing the whole. This is what real cops are, not bullies, not power mongers, not over the top crazy j walking ticket writers - they are just good men doing extraordinary things and calling it a normal day. There are many historic moments in the book, including gruesome murders, famous fires, and infamous serial rapists. What is nice is that they are the center of the story, the men who feel a crushing desire to help others and solve this atrocities are. How refreshing, Jerry. Thank you for making the citizens of your community feel good about those protecting us. I hope for many more stories from you and your fellow officers
